Updated 16 October 2026. Advertising platforms now offer increasingly automated ways to match messages with audiences. That can create opportunities, but it makes one question more important: what is the system being asked to optimise, and what safeguards do you control?
1. New channel prioritisation and budget allocation
On 14 October 2026, Google announced optional channel prioritisation and secondary-channel budget allocation controls for its ads ecosystem. According to Google, these are being rolled out globally across Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen. Availability may vary by account and campaign type.
For businesses, the practical idea is not “always spend more”. It is to set a hierarchy for where money should be allocated first, then test additional inventory with a clearly defined experimental budget and conversion goal.
- Identify your highest-intent channel and the conversion it is expected to generate.
- Keep budget and reporting separate enough to evaluate incremental reach.
- Define the conditions that justify expanding or reducing secondary-channel spend.

2. AI Max is evolving; check the timeline
Google has been expanding AI Max for Search. On 11 June 2026, Google updated its transition guidance: the planned sunset and automatic migration of legacy Dynamic Search Ads were extended to February 2027, while selected other legacy settings were scheduled for upgrades from September 2026. Campaign features and eligibility should be checked in the live Google Ads interface.
On 23 September 2026, Google also described upcoming AI Max reporting that would bring search terms, displayed assets and landing-page paths together in a unified view. Rather than assuming a feature is already live for every advertiser, review what is actually available to the account.

3. AI creative should increase testing quality, not just quantity
Meta’s July 2026 announcement described Muse Image and its planned expansion into advertiser creative workflows. Generating multiple variations may become easier, but more assets are not automatically more persuasive. Good ads still need a coherent offer, audience fit, accurate claims and consistency between creative and landing page.
Compare one purposeful variable at a time: opening hook, product benefit, demonstration or call to action. Label fictional concept promotions clearly and check legal, trademark and licensing requirements before publishing.

4. Define the conversion before automating bids
Leads and purchases should be defined and attributed consistently. Agree what counts as a qualified lead, whether duplicate enquiries are excluded, how cancelled orders affect revenue and how results connect to profit. A campaign can report a high ROAS and still fail to cover variable costs or management expenses.
Use our free advertising profit planner to model margin scenarios, ROAS calculator for core metrics, and responsive ad copy checker to improve copy before testing.
5. Prepare the website for search and AI-driven discovery
Google’s May 2026 Search Central guidance emphasises original, useful content and established technical SEO fundamentals for generative AI search experiences. Machine-readable structure can help describe factual information, but neither a schema file nor an llms.txt file guarantees AI recommendations.
Provide clear service descriptions, helpful answers to real customer questions, accessible HTML and an up-to-date sitemap. Our Article schema generator can help with accurate metadata for educational pages.

A practical 30-minute account review
- Verify the primary conversion action, its attribution method and whether it corresponds to business value.
- Review search terms, placements, channel spend and exclusions that are visible in the account.
- Check whether automatic assets, AI Max settings or other automated features have changed.
- Compare at least two meaningful creative hypotheses against the same objective.
- Make the next optimisation decision from a clear measurement baseline rather than platform headlines.
